Newark, New Jersey

Lying on Newark Bay and the western bank of the Passaic River, Newark, New Jersey is 8 miles west of Lower Manhattan, New York. Located in Essex County in northeastern New Jersey, Newark became a city in 1836 and has an estimated population today of just under 300,000 people.

Here’s a map of Newark, NJ:

Purchasing land from Delaware Indians, Puritans founded Newark in 1666, naming the newfound settlement Pesayak Towne. Later renaming the area New Milford, it is believed to have been branded Newark by Reverend Abraham Pierson who came to the district from Newark on Trent in the United Kingdom. It is however argued that the name actually stems from history, holding biblical significance in the New Ark. Either way, Newark became a township in 1693.

Similar in some ways to other areas of the state, in the late 18th century Newark became somewhat notorious for its leather tanning and shoe manufacturing businesses. The area substantially benefited from Seth Boyden and his pioneering mind, who came to Newark from Massachusetts in 1815. Famed as one of the greatest American inventors by president Thomas Edison, Boyden developed a process for making patent leather. Also credited as one of the first producers of malleable cast iron, Seth Boyer was also involved in developing a larger, more succulent American strawberry. He is celebrated in Washington Park with a statue. Other influential figures and industrial pioneers based in Newark include Edward Weston, who is credited with inventing electrical measuring instruments and Reverend Hannibal Goodwin who patented a flexible film for recording motion pictures, in 1887.

Between 1950 and the early 1970s, many people left Newark. This demographic shift altered the ethnic composition of the area and was made worse in 1967 when the city was plagued by violence and riots. Over the years, many white people vacated Newark in favor of more suburban surrounding areas and this resulted in the African American population of the city increasing from less than one fifth in 1950 to over three fifths by the early 90s. In the 1970s, African American citizens began obtaining political power in Newark and elected the city’s first black mayor, Kenneth Gibson. Newark has faced increasing levels of poverty and citizens infected by HIV/AIDS, in addition to a higher than average rate of infant mortality.

Modern day Newark is the largest city in the state of New Jersey, even bigger than the state capital of Trenton. The close proximity to New York makes Newark a highly industrialized, populous area of the United States, with a diverse range of manufacturers in the area. From electronic equipment, chemicals, rubber and furniture, to leather goods, jewellery, textiles and food, in Newark there is practically any type of manufacturing business imaginable. The insurance industry, in addition to printing and publishing businesses, is also of significance in Newark. As a transportation center and major distribution point for the East Coast of the United States, Newark International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world, serving not only Newark and New Jersey but also much of New York. The Port of Newark opened in 1915 and is now operated and controlled by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
